A SMALL SHOWCASE OF 3D MODELS CREATED FOR A UNIVERSITY FINAL.

BACKSTORY:

The backstory of these models is related to a game idea I had in the past about an underground robot civilization that formed after humanity’s extinction, controlled by a tyrant. The spiky robot was meant to be the main character who attempts to overthrow said tyrant.

DESIGN:

THE SPIKE ROBOT AND ITS SWORD:

My main idea for its design was to make it somehow reference the human skeleton and muscle structure, with the wires at some points resembling tendons. For the general aesthetic, I took inspiration from punk and grindfiction. I wanted to make the robot have a DIY, customized look, less that the robot was designed by a human and created in a factory and more as if it built and customized itself over time.

There’s not much to say about the sword, early on I wanted the wires on it to be formed in a way that looks like a bicep muscle, but I couldn’t find a way to make it look good and feel consistent with its owners design.

THE BRAIN ROBOT:

Since the general mindset was to have robots that do not look like they were created with a human input, I wanted to push the idea of how a sci-fi robot can look like. Technically, robots are just animated computers, so this character is just a PC with legs.  The brain was supposed to reflect the robot society’s desire with imitating human features, the structure of it is more stylized as if someone was asked to draw a brain from memory (both as an intentional story choice and cause I’m not a doctor). Making this one was tricky, partly because designing desktop computers in a way that would make sense is hard and cause I ran into quite a few issues during the modeling process due to solidify modifier being very annoying.

THE ROOM:

My idea was for it to be some sort of abandoned, mildly important for the functionality of one of the city’s districts location. As this mesh specifically is a public space, I was able to play around with possible graffiti topics a bit more. One of the graffiti’s features the previously mentioned tyrant of the robot society. For the heart, the same idea applies from the brain roomba: a somewhat realistic imitation of an actual human organ, but not quite.

CONCEPT ART:

SPIKEBOT EARLY CONCEPT

My original idea was, intentionally or not, more "anime" leaning. I scrapped the design cause the cloth scarf felt too human and the "hair" reminded me too much of Sonic.

DESIGN EXPLORATION 1

DESIGN EXPLORATION 2

I was experimenting with the silhouette and the overall shapes a bit more, wanting to see how much I can tweak the idea.

ROOM CONCEPTS 1

ROOM CONCEPT 2

Various visual experiments for the room.

SWORD AND ROOMBA

These did not have as much visual experimentation as the others, mostly cause I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to create shape-wise.
